Weekly Message: May 1st

  Hello Kindergarten parents,

We had a busy week preparing for our assembly.  The children did a great job refining their "characters" movements, speaking loudly and clearly and working as team.  The children all pitched in to help paint our submarine and boat as well as parts for our ocean mural in the front hall.  Each student worked to make an unique fish.  We had fun looking at their differing attributes and using comparative language.  ie.  This fish is mostly blue, but that one has many colours."

I am so proud of the hard work the children put into our Ocean Environments unit.  We had a great conversation about the growth that took place doing our performance.  We talked a lot about resiliency and how doing something new and a little scary, like a first assembly performance, had us step out of our comfort zone.  We all learned that even if it felt scary, we handled it, and did a great job. We have created a month timeline on our morning message area and have discovered that we are only two month away from the end of the year. (Way closer to June than to September).  When doing our work, we have been thinking, "What is expected in Grade One?" Mrs. Bisson, a grade one teacher,  popped over for a visit while we working in our journals.  She was so impressed by the "finger spaces", "heart words" and periods she saw in our students' writing.

The kids were super excited to join their first outdoor recess with the rest of the school after the assembly.  Some were a little nervous, but....they handled it, and they are super excited that next year they will get to do recess everyday.  We talked about questions and guesses about how grade one will be the same and different as Kindergarten.  In June, the kids will have an opportunity to visit a grade one classroom to help them feel prepared for that change.

We finished off our unit on Ocean by creating a landscape picture using water colour crayons.  This was a new medium for the kindergarteners.  It really helped them practice colouring in one direction with consistent pressure.

This week we worked on adding -s to words.  ie. cat - cats.  I have sent home a roll and read and our decodable passage for you to work on at home.

Have a great weekend.
