September 12: Weekly Message
Dear Kindergarten Families,
We had a busy week filled assemblies, outdoor time and lots of learning. The children are becoming more comfortable with our morning entry. Please ensure you check, empty and return folder each day. This is where you put notes about changes in pickups (preferred over emails/verbal messages.) Please ensure your child has a backpack that fits their folder and a large library book. Please do not fold folders.

We have learned about different types of and how letters represent the sounds we make. This week we have started our UFLI (University of Florida) literacy program.
After reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, we used sidewalk chalk to practice making lines, shapes and letters outside! We made our own coconut trees in our Learning Journals, then we learned how to use our letter stamps to re-enact the story.
At Home: Talk about different lines that you can see. Straight, curvy, zig-zag, horizontal, vertical.
Math:
We have started with a focus on counting. We have discussed big questions such as,
-"Why do we count?"
-"What can you count?"
-"What things are easy or hard to count"
AT HOME: Practice counting around the house ex. count utensils at dinner. count socks when folding laundry, count steps on your back deck)
Developing counting and estimation skills with our counting cups. Students practices strategies like moving objects as they count and arranging small number in recognizable shapes.
Centres:
Practicing life skills like washing dishes at the house centre....."You're welcome!"
-Pouring, mixing, scooping....developing scientific skills at the water table.
Developing leadership and care for our class environment: cleaning up spills at the sand table.
Creative expression at the painting centre.
Using our imaginations.
Observing our Summer Tree.
Sketching our tree: Scientists draw what they observe.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Wacker and Ms. Cain
