Weekly Message: October 9

 Oki AM Kindergarten parents,

What's New:

The big excitement this week was opening up a doctor's office in place of the house centre.  The children did a lot of thinking about "who" works at a doctor's office and who would visit and why.

We also started thinking about white glue!  We started a"glue table", where kids collaboratively worked on building with stryofoam and cardboard pieces.  Using white glue is tricky for little hands.  Twisting the top open, tipping and shaking it upside down and putting the "right amount" to do the job.

We also used white glue to help us make leaf creatures after reading Leaf Man by Lois Elhert.  Thinking carefully about the different sizes and shapes of letters, the kids made a whole menagerie of leaf creatures including a leaf moose, leaf deer, leaf bunny, left and leaf birds!

Literacy:

Focus Letters: This week we reviewed letters Aa and Mm and explored the letter Ss and Tt.  Please encourage your child to track the green dots with their finger while making the letter sounds. The kids have sounded out words: at, mat and sat!  They are readers!

Heart Words:

Review:  the

New:  I  (I am cold.) When this letter is alone and capital we must "remember" to say its letter name.

Literature:  We read several stories this week about Thanksgiving and Fall changes (leaves)

-We paid attention to rhyming words

-We talked about comparing books with similar themes including text-to-text connections

-We discovered some of the attributes of fictional versus non-fiction books

Math:

Since the beginning of school we have been looking carefully at objects and thinking about their attributes.  We have thought about:

-colour (including shades and tints)

-size (big, medium, small)

-shape (round, tall, bumpy, square, rectangular)

-quality (broken, full, old, new)

-texture (smooth, soft, hard, crunchy)

-pattern (striped, spotted, plain)

This week we worked on developing comparative language and thinking about the concepts of SAME and DIFFERENT.  When examining Fall leaves, we compared leaves and orally made sentences with partners.

Same:  "Both our leaves are yellow"  "Both our leaves have a point"

Different: "My leaf is small but your leaf is big", "My leaf has smooth edges but your left has bumpy edges"

We also practiced sorting sets into two categories.  ie.  "Red and yellow" or "brown and not brown"

Phys Ed.:

This week we worked on both kicking and throwing skills both inside and outside.  It was a lot of fun!

Have a great weekend,

Mrs. Wacker
