Weekly Message: Sept 18
Hello Kindergarten Parents,
It was great seeing so many of you at our Open House and Corn Roast.
Opening Activities:
Once children put away their folders (thanks for sending them every day) they get to work at table time.
Table Time: Fine Motor activities (building, cutting, manipulating small objects)
Morning Meeting: Using a visual schedule and a Yesterday/Today/Tomorrow/Soon grid to help us think about sequencing and vocabulary about time. (before, soon, later, in a while)
Phys. Ed:
We have been taking advantage of the warm weather to explore movement on the playground and games of the field and gaga ball pit. We have also introduced using the gymnasium. We have started warming up for each phys. ed. class by running laps to help us build stamina for the Terry Fox Run. AM Kindergarten will be doing the Terry Fox Run during our gym time in the morning, hopefully with the support of our grade 3/4 buddies.
Learning to use equipment such as bean bags: (balancing, throwing, catching, jumping)
We have started learning about Terry's story and legacy using non-fiction books and videos.
Library: On Tuesday (Please return book by Monday)
Music: On Wednesday. Students work with Mrs. McMillian
Literacy:
We have continued learning about how we make vowel and consonant sounds with our mouths. We have also learned to form almost all the upper case letters using straight, curved and slanted lines.
Math:
We have continued to explore shapes, sizes and quantities (1-6), doing scavenger hunts both in our classrooms and during our community walk. We have continued explore learning tools to explore number including number paths, dice, 5-frame templates. We have practiced counting and comparing objects, words in our morning message, syllables in our names parts of our bodies. We have been using Math Up to guide "math talks". These are opportunities to have student ask "big questions" about concepts.
ex. "Which things are hard to count?"
"Do you only count the things you see? If counting people would you assume there is a baby in the stroller?"
This week we used bingo dobbers to fill empty pages. We thought about words, such as close and far, many and few. Then we used dice to generate numbers, which we needed to identify and circle with markers. It was a great chance to also writing numerals.
Four looks like a square!
Using a number path to help form numerals.
Science:
We have continued to talk about behaviours and traits of scientist: look carefully, are curious, ask questions, share information. We have been making regular observations of the outdoor environment in our school yard and thinking about how Summer is coming to an end.
We have also introduced the concept of an environment. We have started by contrasting our neighbourhood environment with a farm environment. For example, we noticed that you could find a dog or a tree both environments, but you would probably only find a pig, barn or tractor on a farm.
Social Studies:
We have been learning about the question words: who, where and when and roles people have in the school community. Ex. Mrs. Bouchard (who: librarian), helps us in the library (where), we visit her on Tuesdays (when)
Please ensure you have completed your CBE DEMOGRAPHIC forms found on your myCBE account. If you are unsure how to access your myCBE account, please contact Mrs. Harbourne in the office.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Wacker
