Weekly Message: Sept 24
Hello AM Kindergarten families,
So much great learning in a short week.
Math:
Kindergarten has become experts recognizing numbers 1-6 in familiar patterns at a glance using bead bars, 5 frames, dice/domino patterns and loose materials.
Literacy:
We explored the letter Aa when it makes it short /a/ sound in words such as, at, as, cat, map. (We are not associating Aa when in makes other sounds at this point like when you hear it in "and or are'. When we learn a new letter, we will send a page home so you can practice. When printing the new letter, PLEASE, follow the coloured motor plan shown on the page. We are teaching children to use an efficient and effect way to consistently form letters. This will help you child greatly when they get to older grades and need to write quickly. When making letters, start at the top and go down and ALWAYS make horizontal words from left to right.
On the Aa page have your child make the /a/ sound by tracking their fingers on the green dots from left to right. At the end of the first line, hop down to the next left line. Please hold on to this page and practice it over and over. Next week, I will send home a literacy folder for you to keep all your child's literacy sheets for at home practice.
Science:
We have been exploring the 'Matter' unit in science. We are learning that an object can be described by its properties. After reading the book, Tiny Treasures, we learned to examine objects like scientists. We are learning to LOOK carefully at our natural surroundings. Scientists move slowly and take our time. We look at shapes, colours, sizes. We examine textures (is it smooth, rough, shiny, prickly?) We ask questions, such as, “Is this object from nature or man-made?” or “Is this object whole or only a partial part?”
However, so much of our science objectives are explored through our daily "centre time". Here students use their natural curiosity to explore a variety of sensory materials like water, sand and paint.
Terry Fox Run:
The students did a great with the help of their grade 3/4 buddies running many laps in support of cancer research. We watched video of Terry Fox's legacy from the Terry Fox Foundation before our run to help the child learn and appreciate why schools across the country run in his legacy. (Mrs. Wacker was in Kindergarten when Terry did his run!) It felt great to work together as a community to support an important cause.
The office has asked for us to send along this link to the TRS Fall Family Survey:
