Weekly Message: October 16

 Hello AM Kindergarten families,

What's New:

During our short week we thought about farm environments. We thought about "things" or parts of a farm and whether they were living or non-living.  We noticed the non-living components were often things the farm environment needed.  We sorted farm toys as a group, then drew pictures in our learning journal.  We also added some harvested "crops" to our nature centre.  We did a: "What is in the box" guessing game, to discover a pumpkin was in my mystery box.  The children asked questions such as, "Is it big?" "Is if fluffy?" "Is it heavy?".  We asked 10 questions, after which, all the students were pretty certain it was a pumpkin.  Good job!

At centres, many students worked on making a huge airport with the big blocks.  There was great collaboration.  Everyone one in the class helped clean it up each day, working hard to sort the blocks by size and shape.

Literacy: Focus letters so far: /a/, /m/, /s/, /t/, /p/

This week we learned to read and create VC (vowel-consonant) and CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words on our magnet boards including "at" as well as "mat" and "sat". We also added the consonant "pat" to our list.

New Heart Word: and (this word is only temporarily a heart word.  The letter a is beside an n, so the /an/ sound is nasalized.  We will learn /d/ soon.

Math:

We learned the game "Garbage" using ten-frame cards.  This game helps children recognize the number patterns on ten-frames, match the ten-frame to the numeral and put the cards in sequence.  We also learned about card skills such as shuffling, drawing a card from a "draw pile" and following game instructions.

We also did a few shape scavenger hunts in the class.  We compared a circle with a ball and talked about 2-D versus 3-D shapes as well as describe words such as round.

Phys. Ed:

We have been working on throwing, catching and ball handing skills with a variety of different balls including dodge balls as well as both big and small footballs.  We also enjoyed Thursday morning on the playground and in the gaga ball pit because it was such a  beautiful day!

Have a great long weekend,

Mrs. Wacker
