Weekly Message: December 18

Our winter break is upon us and we hope you have a wonderful time with family and friends.  

We spent a few minutes every morning with the entire school singing Carols in the gym. We made a special art project for our families this week. Maybe you can decide whether you open it now or save it for a special celebration in the coming week.  Our gifts are very fragile, so handle them with care.  

 

Our learning from this week: 

Math: 

We have continued patterning and worked on making patterns with a variety of mediums. The students made wrapping paper using patterns for their special family gift.  

 

Literacy: 

We have learned letters Aa, Mm, Ss and Tt. We are beginning to learn about VC (vowel-consonant words) We will be working toward making some CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant) in the New Year. A blue at home practice folder was sent home this week. Please take a look and keep the folder at home with you. New sheets and UFLI information will be sent home to add to it as the year goes on. Try writing some of the letters of the alphabet using our coloured guide in the folder as a reference.  

 

Social/Science: 

 

We practiced using our senses, smelling different seasonal things such as: cloves, lemon, peppermint, pine, cinnamon, star anise and cardamon.  We made observations whether the scent was "strong" or "mild", discussed whether we liked the smell or not and where we have noticed the smell in the real world. 

 

We will continue sharing our family pictures in the New Year. We will pair-and-share with a classmate and describe our celebrations and answer questions that our partner will ask and then we will switch roles and listen to our partner when they share. These are important skills to learn to be a good listener and friend.   

 

Reminders: 

  • Return Alien inline forms if you haven't 

  • Look for library books over the holiday (many are overdue) and return them.  We have library on Monday when we return in the new year.

Welcome to Kindergarten in Room 7!

Dear Kindergarten Families,  We had great first week in Kindergarten. It is amazing to see how comfortable students are following our routines like putting on their indoor shoes at arrival or lining up for music! Our daily communications folders should be in and ready to go on Monday morning. Please check these folders next week each day and remove any notices or classwork from them. This is where you can send notes to the teacher and completed forms. We focused this week on building routines, such as gathering our mini white boards and markers for literacy work and cleaning up after our centre time.   Centre Time, is an extended daily learning time, where student can make self-determined choices in their learning. Children choose from activities such as painting, sand exploration, building and imaginative play. The children have been very focused on their learning and have been making lots of friends. September 12: Weekly Message

 Dear Kindergarten Families,  We had a busy week filled assemblies, outdoor time and lots of learning. The children are becoming more comfortable with our morning entry.  Please ensure you check, empty and return folder each day.  This is where you put notes about changes in pickups (preferred over emails/verbal messages.) Please ensure your child has a backpack that fits their folder and a large library book. Please do not fold folders.  Plastic School-Home Communication folder We have learned about different types of and how letters represent the sounds we make.  This week we have started our UFLI (University of Florida) literacy program. After reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, we used sidewalk chalk to practice making lines, shapes and letters outside! Weekly Message: Sept 27

 Hello Kindergarten Families, We took the opportunity to go outside several times this week for PD, science and for our community walk.   We have been practicing using our senses to make observations about our outdoor environment and the change of seasons to fall. At Home :   You can support your child’s learning at home by talking about and comparing the objects in their home environment. Identify colours, compare size and describe shape.  Ie. “Look at the   trees on our front lawn.  The red one is taller than the yellow one.” Learning intentions in Math: I can sort a set of objects by size, colour and shape.  We looked at the attributes of objects using plastic animal figures, marker lids, and even students in the class. We have been practicing sharing our “sorting rule” and describing which attribute they sorted by.  Ex.  “I sorted by colour.  These bears are green, these ones are red and these ones are yellow.” Learning Intentions ...
